Behind Seven Café Smoothies: How Every Freshly Blended Cup Comes Together

Unlike bottled smoothies, Seven Café Smoothies are prepared in the store after purchase. This summer, the lineup is being reimagined with a new brand identity. We spoke with the development team to explore the technology and ideas behind every cup.

The Early Challenges of Convenience Store Smoothies

Available at select 7-Eleven stores across Japan, Seven Café Smoothies have become a popular choice not only for customers in Japan but also for international visitors looking to experience a uniquely Japanese convenience store. Enjoying one is simple. After completing their purchase at the checkout, customers scan the barcode on the cup, place it into the in store machine, and receive a smoothie freshly blended in minutes. Behind that seamless experience is years of product development designed to deliver consistent quality with every cup.

The idea for Seven Café Smoothies began in the 2010s, when demand for convenient and healthier food options was growing in Japan. From the start, the project reflected many of the company's long term priorities, including supporting healthier lifestyles and reducing food waste.

Development was far from straightforward. Early versions were refrigerated rather than frozen, limiting both texture and ingredient options. Years of improvements in freezing technology and equipment led to the smoothie system now in place at available at participating stores nationwide, which continues to evolve with seasonal offerings.

Precision Engineering and Sourcing Behind Every Cup

One of the defining features of a Seven Café Smoothie is the barcode scan before blending. While it may seem like a simple way to start the machine, it actually tells the machine exactly how to make each smoothie.

"The barcode tells the machine which blending program to use," explains Maeda, a product developer at Seven-Eleven Japan. "Blending time and speed vary depending on the ingredients, so every smoothie is prepared using the settings that best match its recipe."

The technology has evolved significantly since the product's launch. Early versions relied on modified commercial machines, but the team later developed a machine specifically for Seven Café Smoothies. This made it possible to achieve more consistent texture and flavor across every cup.

Attention to detail extends beyond the blending process. After every smoothie is prepared, the machine automatically cleans itself before serving the next customer.

"Even if we perfect the recipe, it wouldn't matter if traces of the previous drink affected the flavor," Maeda says. "We want every customer to experience each smoothie at its absolute best."

The freezing process for puree cubes

Every smoothie begins with carefully selected ingredients. With more than 22,000 stores across Japan, Seven Café Smoothies are available at a growing number of locations. Even so, securing a stable supply of fruit and vegetables that consistently meet quality standards is no easy task.

To help address this challenge, the smoothies also make use of fruit that does not meet retail appearance standards. Utilizing these ingredients helps reduce food waste while maintaining high product quality.

"We also use our own freezing technology when producing the fruit cubes," says Maeda. "Every step is crafted to unlock the full potential of our fruits and vegetables, delivering every smoothie at its peak flavor."

A New Brand Identity Focused on Fruit

The refreshed Seven Café Smoothie lineup

This summer, Seven Café Smoothies are being refreshed with a new identity that puts fruit at the center.

In the past, communication around the product often emphasized health benefits and environmental initiatives. While those values remain unchanged, the renewed branding places greater focus on flavor and the taste of real fruit.

"We want more people, especially those who have never tried our smoothies before, to discover how enjoyable they are," Maeda said.

The lineup has also evolved, with year-round favorites joined by limited-time flavors featuring fruits in season. Current seasonal offerings include watermelon, mango, and pitaya, with even more releases on the horizon.

The redesign extends beyond the recipes. The smoothie cups now feature a clean white Seven Café Smoothie logo instead of the previous black design, allowing the vibrant colors of the drinks themselves to become part of the visual identity.

"The smoothie becomes the background of the design," Maeda explains. "It better reflects the colorful, fresh experience we want customers to enjoy."

Enjoying Freshly Blended Smoothies Every Day

For Maeda, one moment best captures the appeal of Seven Café Smoothies.

"When customers open the lid, I hope the first thing they notice is the generous pieces of fruit on top," she says. "Then, with the first sip, they can experience the taste of a smoothie made fresh in the store."

Behind every Seven Café Smoothie is years of refinement, from ingredient sourcing and freezing technology to dedicated equipment and recipe development. The result is a drink designed to deliver the same quality, whether enjoyed by a regular customer or someone visiting Japan for the first time.

This summer, Seven Café Smoothies invite customers to discover that experience one cup at a time.
